Creating a memorable experience for guests at a B&B goes beyond offering a comfortable bed and a good breakfast. Many travelers seek unique moments and personal touches that make their stay special and worth remembering. (In my 14 years of experience many guests created their own wacky experiences... LOL, but you can read all about that in my book!) With the cost of living skyrocketing, the challenge for B&B owners is how to add value without significantly increasing costs. Fortunately, small, thoughtful additions can transform a simple stay into an unforgettable experience. This post explores practical, budget-friendly ideas that can elevate your B&B and delight your guests.
Personal Touches That Make a Big Difference
Guests appreciate feeling welcomed and cared for; personal touches create a warm atmosphere and show that you value their stay. Here are some easy touches to make them comfortable and happy in their new space.
Welcome Notes
A handwritten welcome note in each room can make guests feel special. Include little tips about your amenities or just a simple thank you message to them expressing your appreciation for choosing you.
Customized Recommendations and/or Take-Aways
Prepare a small booklet with coupons or a digital guide with your favorite local restaurants, attractions, and hidden gems. Tailor suggestions based on guest interests (including dietary needs) when possible.
Local Treats
Offer a small basket with local snacks, homemade cookies, or seasonal fruit. This adds a taste of the region and shows attention to detail. I would make tons of jam every year and would give some guests a little jar of whatever the seasonal creation was - they absolutely loved that!

Enhancing Comfort Without High Costs
Comfort is key to a great stay, but it doesn’t require expensive upgrades.
Quality Bedding and Pillows
Invest in good-quality linens and a variety of pillows. Quality products tend to last longer than their cheap counterparts and I discovered that most people actually can tell good from poor quality; they will notice the difference in comfort and sleep quality and you will have to replace these items less often.
Blackout Curtains and White Noise Options
Help guests rest better by providing blackout curtains or take-away eye masks. A small white noise machine or a device-docking station can also improve sleep but I found that a really welcome gift was a simple pair of silicone ear-plugs... this revolutionized my sleep first but then I discovered the gratitude in sharing those little miracle-workers!
Extra Blankets and Cozy Throws
Make extra blankets available in rooms or common areas. This simple addition adds warmth and comfort, especially in cooler seasons.
Creating Inviting Common Spaces
Common areas encourage guests to relax and socialize, enhancing their overall experience. Think in terms of comfort but also consider your cleaning routine and local health codes when adding items.
Comfortable Seating and Lighting
Arrange seating to invite conversation or quiet reading. Use warm lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. I found that leather or a "pleather" furniture was the smartest and easiest for care and sanitation purposes though it lacks a little on the comfort side of the equation.
Books and Games
Provide a selection of books, magazines, cards or board games. These low-cost items encourage guests to unwind and enjoy downtime. I always had a set of poker chips on hand too; I became damn good at poker over the years lol.
Coffee and Tea Station or a small Fridge for Guest Use
I actually never set up a self-serve coffee and tea station; if guests wanted this I was more than happy to make it for them but if you have the space it might work well for you... What I did do was provide them their own fridge for storing their own treats or beverages for their down-time. Thinking back, I don't think there was a single group in 14 years that didn't use their fridge.
Offering Unique Experiences
Experiences create lasting memories and can be added with minimal expense.
Themed Breakfasts
I used to make breakfasts based on countries - one day might be Mexican and the next might be Italian and so on. I found this to be a highlight for my people and they would always mention it in the reviews!
Guided Walks or Bike Rentals
Partner with local guides to offer experiences. You can also create self-guided walking tours with maps and points of interest - this is an easy task these days with the unlimited resources on our computers and the internet.
Workshops and Classes
Make guests aware of local workshops such as cooking classes, craft sessions, or gardening tips that may be happening during their stay.
Thoughtful Amenities That Impress
Small amenities show attention to detail and enhance guest satisfaction.
Bathroom Extras
Provide quality toiletries. These little luxuries make guests feel pampered.
Charging Stations and Wi-Fi
Ensure easy access to charging points and reliable internet. Consider adding universal adapters for international guests.
Eco-Friendly Options
Offer reusable water bottles, recycling bins, and encourage sustainable practices. Many guests appreciate environmentally conscious choices.
Leveraging Local Partnerships
Collaborating with local businesses can add value without extra costs.
Discounts and Vouchers
Arrange discounts with nearby restaurants, shops, or attractions. Provide guests with vouchers or coupons.
Cross-Promotion
Promote local events or markets in your B&B. This helps guests connect with the community and supports local businesses.
Local Art and Decor
Display artwork or crafts from local artists. This adds character to your space and introduces guests to local culture.
Efficient Communication and Guest Support
Good communication enhances guest experience and reduces stress for your guests, and for you too. There is nothing more concerning for a traveler than to not be able to get in touch with their host and then the anxiety translates into an awkward conversation later on.
Provide Clear Pre-Arrival Information
Send detailed instructions about check-in, parking, and amenities in advance. This helps guests plan and feel confident about their move-in. This is the best way to create your first impression and a great way for them to make theirs!
Responsive Messaging
Be available to answer questions promptly via phone, email, or messaging apps.
Feedback and Follow-Up
Encourage guests to share feedback and respond graciously. Use suggestions to improve and show guests you care.
Seasonal and Event-Based Enhancements
Adjusting your offerings based on seasons or local events can create timely value. Because my B&B was in such a remote location I really had no choice but to take advantage of local, seasonal offerings.
Seasonal Decorations
Decorate common areas and rooms with seasonal touches like flowers, pumpkins, or holiday lights. I tried not to put too many extras into the guests' suites but always made sure that common areas had a seasonal "glow" to them.
Season-Specific Packages
Create special packages for local festivals, events or holidays. Include tickets, meals, or packed-lunch options. My winter guests were almost all either heli-skiers or snowmobilers so a packed lunch was always available for purchase. Because the guests were out in the cold, I bought single-sized super-insulated thermoses that I would fill with piping hot, home-made hearty soups or stews along with buns, bottled water, fruit and cookies or granola bars. They absolutely loved this and were often the envy of the other outdoor adventurers that they would run into out in the wilderness.
Outdoor Spaces
If you have a garden or patio, have comfy seating available for your guests, decorate with fairy lights, or add a fire pit for them to enjoy with their glasses of wine during warmer months. These are all wonderful things for you to enjoy on your nights off too!
Break the Mould, Not the Bank
So many accommodations are offering a room for you to sleep in, with little else more than that; they get away with it because they can. Maybe they're the cheapest or the last room in town, whatever the case, they aren't in it to make an impression and probably don't care about the returning customer. The bottom line is that you just don't really have to break the bank to create a really good experience, it just usually requires a bit of effort and time. Use the off-seasons to plan your next season and stay on top of what's going on in your community. Try to work with other locals and collaborate on your ideas and experiences to continue to expand and create a better business for yourself.
I hope you've enjoyed my tips on how to turn a STAY into an EXPERIENCE. As always I welcome your feedback and look forward to connecting again; thank you for dropping by my blog and come back to visit any time! s.
