The Okanagan Valley is one of Canada’s premier wine regions, known for its stunning landscapes and exceptional wineries. Visiting this area offers more than just tasting wine; it’s about experiencing the hospitality, the unique terroir, and the passion behind every bottle. I recently explored several wineries here and want to share my favorite experiences along with some wine recommendations that stood out.

Discovering the Charm of Okanagan Wineries

Each winery in the Okanagan has its own story and style. What makes this region special is the diversity of wines produced, from crisp whites to bold reds, all influenced by the valley’s unique climate and soil. The hospitality at these wineries is warm and inviting, making every visit memorable.

My Top Winery Visits In No Particular Order

  • Quails’ Gate Winery

Known for its award-winning Pinot Noir, Quails’ Gate provided a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. In my opinion, they have mastered wine-making and it's virtually impossible for me to pick one varietal that stands out with them; though I can say that their Burgundians do top my charts!

I am very happy to be a member of this iconic winery and absolutely love to visit them, never hesitating to bring guests there. They've just released some wonderful new vintages, and like many wineries, they are back onto their own grapes that recovered from the damaging frosts over 2 successive winters.

  • Crown and Thieves

This winery stands out for its risque alure and fabulous wines. I was just there last weekend and wrote this Google review:

What a fantastic visit we had this past weekend! The last time I visited this winery (2 summers ago) I enjoyed it but it wasn't a "stand-out" for me in the many winery visits that I make. Observing our amazing server, Michael, I surmised him to be a master of reading the room, and was able to curate our wines to exactly what would lead me to make some significant purchases. His knowledge of the vineyards, production process, flavor profiles and food pairings was beyond impressive.... and a super tough act to follow. The room is loud so be ready for that, particularly on a busy day; take your tasting out to the patio if noise is an issue for you. We tasted fantastic wines, my favorites include the VERY French-styled sparkling Rose (Pinot Noir and Gamay), the traditional method sparkling (one of the loveliest TM's I've tasted in this region) and the Cab Franc (super fun notes of dill and jalapeno in a big, mouth-watering wine - albeit this is a varietal that's not for everyone).

Locals: visit this winery now, before the tourist crush; your servers have the time to make your time special and you will not regret it, cheers!

  • 8th Generation

This winery is literally 8 generations of farming waiting for you in Summerland. Your experience will be casual and welcoming and I personally love their directive to create interesting wines that aren't available everywhere. The best time to go is definitely now; they've just released their coveted Blanc de Noir, Rose and sparkling wines that may not be available for the whole summer. I love visiting them and tasting new and old favorites!

  • Corcelettes

A wine-tour wouldn't be complete without visiting the Similkameen region; the wines here exhibit a minerality that is unparalleled in BC and shines beautifully in the whites. I've always been a fan of their Chardonnays, Viognier, Rose, Pinot Noir and Syrah - they always please and at least a couple of them are pretty much guaranteed to be found in my racks at home. They have won the title of "Winery of the Year" in recent years, and in a region of about 300 wineries that says A LOT. I've had the blessing of knowing the owners of this winery for years and will always be happy to support them and their spectacular portfolio.

Tips for Visiting Okanagan Wineries

To make the most of your winery visits, consider these practical tips:

  • Book Tastings in Advance

Many wineries require reservations, especially during peak seasons. Booking ahead ensures you get a spot and sometimes access to exclusive tastings.

  • Plan Your Route

The Okanagan is large, so grouping wineries by location helps save time. For example, visit those near Kelowna on one day and those around Penticton on another.

  • Ask Questions

The staff are passionate and knowledgeable. Don’t hesitate to ask about the winemaking process, grape varieties, or food pairings.

  • Enjoy the Food

Many wineries offer food pairings or have on-site restaurants. Sampling local cuisine alongside wine enhances the experience.

Experiencing Okanagan Hospitality

What truly makes the Okanagan wineries special is the hospitality. From the moment you arrive, you feel welcomed and valued. The staff often share stories about the vineyards and winemaking traditions, creating a connection beyond just tasting wine. Many wineries also host events like live music, food festivals, and harvest celebrations, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

Visiting these wineries is not just about sampling wine but about immersing yourself in the culture and landscape of the Okanagan. Whether you are a seasoned wine lover or a curious traveler, the region offers something memorable for everyone. I hope you take the time to enjoy many of our fabulous wineries here this summer and please take a moment to share your experiences with me.
